Support Use of the Clapp School

On Monday, March 28, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., there will be a special meeting of the City Council at which Mayor Galvin will put forth a proposal to allow the Woburn Public Library and the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn to temporarily occupy the Clapp School while construction takes place on their respective facilities.

The community has a great asset in the Clapp School and it is the right thing to do to allow these two organizations, both of whom enrich the community at large, to use it. The proposal calls for the library to occupy the top floor and the Club to occupy the ground floor. This temporary use is a “win win” for the City of Woburn. The tax payers can save on rental costs for an alternative library location & the Club can keep children with working parents safe after school.

The Boys & Girls Club is NOT looking to relocate large swimming programs, athletic leagues, etc. to this space. Primary activities will involve academic assistance and safe place to learn and grow afterschool while parents are working. The Club would also like for their service learning initiatives which engage youth in more than 5,000 collective hours of community service each year to continue. There will be no weekend programs and no late evenings.

Initial inspections have proved the building to be in good condition. The already built in classrooms and bathrooms make it the ideal space to offer learning experiences for Club members.

If this proposal is not supported, the Boys & Girls Club will close for one year.

Knowles Meets Governor Baker

On December 11th Governor Charlie Baker met with finalists of the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Club’s Youth of the Year, including Calvin Knowles of the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn, and recognized them for their accomplishments in their clubs and communities. Massachusetts 2015 Youth of the Year winner Victoria Fils-Aime, of the Waltham Boys & Girls Club, and finalist Tiana Felix, of the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, met with Baker as part of a visit to the Massachusetts State House.

Knowles is currently a freshman at the University of Connecticut studying engineering. He was a member of the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn for 11 years. In his time at the Club he served as a junior staff member and was an officer of the Keystone Club which he represented at National Conferences. He started the Club’s Gemstone Group, a service club for elementary school children. “The Boys & Girls Club has played a major role in my life. I learned to be a leader at the Boys & Girls Club and learned to improve myself at the Club each day. The Club has allowed me to experience fun and unique opportunities, develop my skill, and exercise my leadership” says Knowles.

“It was a privilege to meet with these outstanding young men and women, each of whom has served his or her community with distinction and together represent the spirit of service of the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. I look forward to seeing their future success,” said Governor Baker.

The finalists also toured the historic State House building and met with their hometown legislators.

For 67 years, the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year competition has served as the premier recognition program for Club members. It honors teen Club members who demonstrate exemplary moral character, responsibility to home and family, community and club service, scholastic achievement and diversity of school activities, ability to set goals, and poise and public speaking. In addition the judges consider any significant obstacles the youth has to overcome. The selection process includes essay writing, an oral presentation, and an interview.

In Massachusetts, each local Club winner goes to the statewide competition. This year’s intensive, two day long event was held in June, with 38 youth from across Massachusetts competing. A panel of judges made up of leaders in business, the non-profit world, and government evaluated the contests, and the event culminated in the selection of four finalists and the naming of the Youth of the Year.

“We want to thank Governor Baker for taking the time to meet with these extraordinary young people and for his support of the Boys & Girls Club movement in Massachusetts” commented Ruth Provost, President of the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. “The finalists embody what the Boys & Girls Clubs are all about, and we could not be more proud of them.”

The Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs is a consortium of 42 Boys & Girls Club corporations that operate in 97 communities throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Alliance provides a mechanism for joint decisions and cooperative actions among Clubs in Massachusetts, promotes and strengthens the relationships of Clubs with public and private agencies throughout the state, and raises funds from the state agencies and political subdivisions. More than 170,000 youth in Massachusetts utilize Club services each year. The Alliance is committed to the Boys and Girls Clubs mission to enable all young people, especially who need us most, to reach their full potential.

Santiago Joins National Committee

The James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn is proud to announce that Lexy Santiago & Meg Gambale have been selected to join the 2016 Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Keystone Conference steering committee.  They recently traveled to Atlanta, GA for a weekend-long planning meeting at Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national headquarters.

Lexy joined 15 other teens from Boys & Girls Clubs across the country (and from Japan!) to begin planning the 19th Annual Keystone Conference. The event will take place March 17, 18 and 19 of 2016 in Dallas, TX. The conference aims to be the biggest yet with a goal of hosting 2,500 teens and their advisors. Throughout the planning meeting, Lexy learned about the pressing issues facing teens today and strategized with his peers to present Keystoners with the tools to make a change. They worked together to identify areas that teens think are important and then create ways to tackle these issues in a large group setting.

Being chosen to join this planning team is a great honor and we are very proud of both Lexy & Meg! Join us in wishing them luck as they work hard to host the biggest and best Keystone conference to date.

Camp Old Navy

Old Navy in Burlington, MA recently hosted 17 members of the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn for Camp Old Navy! Youth were able to visit the store and shadow the employees for a day of fun and learning. Club members learned how to operate the store’s registers, how to design displays on the floor and also were able to put together outfits that were displayed in the fitting room. At the end of the day, the kids engaged in an informative Question & Answer session with the employees. It was an excellent day of career exploration for our kids! Our Club is very grateful for the opportunity to partner with Old Navy for this important program.

Cummings Foundation Supports Building Futures Campaign

In the fall of 2014, the Cummings Foundation announced its support of the Building Futures Campaign to renovate and expand the Clubhouse located at Charles Gardner Lane in Woburn. The foundation will grant $2 million dollars to the Boys & Girls Club to support this important project. As part of the gift agreement, the Club has decided to rename the organization to the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn. Jamie McKeown was the Club’s Boy of the Year in 1974 and was also the first alumni of the Club to become President of the Board of Directors. At the time of his early death, he was the President Cummings Properties.
