George Whitfield Named 2018 PFC Joseph L. Drew Youth of the Year!

On Thursday, April 5, 2018 the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn hosted their 54th Annual Awards Night. This event highlights members who have excelled over the 2017-2018 program year in the Club’s core program areas: academic success, good character & leadership, and healthy lifestyles. This year the Club honored 148 youth and teens for their dedication to the Club and their hard work in Club programs. Additionally the organization distributed $5,360 in scholarship funds in memory of distinguished Club alumni to ten Club seniors.

The night culminates in the naming of the 2018 PFC Joseph L. Drew Youth of the Year, our Club’s highest honor. George Whitfield was awarded this title. He proudly describes himself as a Club kid and says that “the Club has given me not just a place to go after school, or a place to do homework, but a home where I feel welcomed as member of a vibrant community of inspiring individuals.”

Exceptional teen Club members who were nominated for this year’s prestigious award include Colin Breslin, Matthew Cerullo, Lauren Harkins, Matthew Juko, Rory McDaniel, Kelly Nett, Nora Newman, Madison Vecchi and George Whitfield.

Polar Plunge a Great Success!

Freezin’ For a Reason!

The first ever Polar Plunge to support the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn was a tremendous success! More than $7,000 (with donations still coming in!) was raised to support the mission of the Club, inspiring youth to find their greatness. 50 brave Club supporters, ranging in age from 8 years to 78 years, dunked into frigid, icy Horn Pond.  A crowd of spectators cheered them on on a rainy Sunday afternoon.  The event was spearheaded by Drew Crawford of the Club’s Board of Directors.

Pizza was generously donated by Gloria’s Pizza, Romas Bakery, Toscano’s Pizza, Mike’s Pizza, Pizza Market, My Brother’s Place, Lisa’s Pizzeria and UNOs of Woburn.

Special thanks to John Devine and North Suburban Transportation for supplying the school bus to bring participants and spectators to and from Horn Pond. Fire Chief Stephen Adgate, Deputy Chief Clark Kenton, and Group 2 Captain George Poole had many firefighters in survival suits and standing by to support the safety of all involved. Woburn Police also dispatched Officer Joe Wells and Officer Dana Gately to assist with the traffic in the area. Additional thanks to Woburn’s City Council, Recreation Commission, and Mayor Scott Galvin (who also jumped in with us!) for their support and approval of the event.

The Polar Plunge was a tremendous success and we are already planning for 2019! Thank you to everyone who showed their support!
